Medium and Ghost Whisperer: Early November Spoilers . . .

Also an updated press release for the Halloween episode of “Medium” included . . .
So I am combining “Ghost Whisperer” and “Medium” into one. “Medium” I realize I haven’t done a post on since the debut, but I find it hard to talk about sometimes when there is no story arch that’s advancing the plot. I find myself having the same issue with this week’s “Ghost Whisperer” as it clearly was a stand alone episode this week.
“Ghost Whisperer” was about a computer genius (Chad Lowe) who basically locks himself in his house and is haunted by an ex-girlfriend who had his baby but never told him. It was a different twist on a story I’m almost positive the show has done before. It really didn’t make any headway with the hospital ghosts at all, it was simply a stand-alone episode. While not bad, it wasn’t great either.
“Medium” meanwhile has been a string of stand-alone episodes since the debut, with a few advancements made. Allison is slowly getting better, regaining the use of her hand and the side of her body that was paralyzed. Joe meanwhile is working at a new job for a genius who doesn’t really want help, but has to use his budget so hires people to sit around and do whatever they want. Joe is slowly convincing the guy he can be of use to him.
I love Joe’s new haircut (finally!) and I also love seeing the kids used more. It’s so funny to hear Marie actually talking as much as she does. She didn’t talk for so long and now she doesn’t shut up!
I don’t really have too much to say about the latest “Ghost Whisperer.” The hospital storyline continued, with two ghosts being the main ghosts. One was a ghost of someone in an oxygen mask haunting the morgue. The other a residual haunting attached to an old instrument Jim found and brought home.
The later ghost was a surgeon who had a heart attack during an open heart surgery and thought he killed his patient. He didn’t, and once Melinda made him see that, he moved on. The ghost in the morgue though, who is apparently pretty violent and likes to manipulate the dead bodies, remains a mystery.
So we have yet another unknown ghost in the hospital, along with that Sarah Stitch girl. Seems like they are building up to a big hospital story here. The ghost in the morgue I thought was a little too “House on Haunted Hill” for my tastes, they copied the way those ghosts moved and screamed for him.
Eli’s mother’s ghost remained around, looking after Eli who was sick in this episode. I am not sure why she’s sticking around and won’t cross over (maybe I missed that from last week’s episode?).
Both shows look excellent this week, tackling the “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” as well as “Night of the Living Dead.”
So this week on “Ghost Whisperer,” Eli’s father was brought into the hospital were he suffered a fatal heart attack. His death brought Eli’s mother’s ghost back, she had died almost 8 years earlier. She was hanging around for a reason. She needed Melinda to get Eli’s dad to cross over before he started snooping and causing trouble. Of course Eli’s dad was stubborn and wasn’t going anywhere when he saw things happening between Eli and the daughter of his business partners, something he didn’t like!
The daughter and Eli grew up together and were each others’ first love/crush. However Eli’s dad, over the years, had told them both that Eli was dating someone, or she was dating someone. He also began haunting them as they got closer. Melinda began to piece things together . . . Eli’s mom had an affair which Eli’s dad found out about.
It turns out Eli’s parents shared a lake cabin with another couple, the mom was the dad’s business partner and the dad his best friend. Eli’s dad came up one night to find his wife setting up a romantic scene. He was shocked, and saw the husband’s car speeding off. He confronted the husband later, who wouldn’t confirm or deny what was going on. Eli’s dad worried if Eli was his son or not, which would make Eli possibly the brother to their daughter. This was why he was haunting them, to keep them apart.
Well as it turned out, Eli’s mom was having an affair, but with the wife not the husband! The other husband always suspected, which is why he let Eli’s dad think what he did. He didn’t want to break up his own family over this. The other wife basically loved her husband as well as Eli’s mom, she was caught in the middle. Eli’s mom however was gay, but felt trapped in the closet so to speak, and was afraid to come out.
My Thoughts
I have to say, I was shocked by the turn of events. I didn’t even guess this one! I just thought they were doing a generic “affair and now your in love with your sister” storyline. The gay twist was pretty good!
It also seems after all this time Eli might have met a girl that not only likes him, but doesn’t mind hi gift at all.
Melinda and Jim’s son got little air time in this episode, which I didn’t mind. I don’t think every episode needs to be all about him. We still got no answers about Sam, his past, how people think of Sam/Jim. I’m thinking we probably won’t at this point.
So this week on “Ghost Whisperer” a young woman was haunting Melinda, a friend, and the whole town of Grandview via an email chain letter that promised death if it wasn’t forwarded. The girl and her mom were in a serious car accident, with the mom barely hanging on and the girl dying. She was convinced it was because she didn’t forward the letter, which came from someone named Scarlett Stitch, a doll with it’s mouth and eyes stitched up basically. She was haunting everyone trying to get them to forward the email and keep it going, otherwise they too would die.
Melinda kept having dreams as if her mouth and eyes had been stitched up. She even woke to a weird ghost couple trying to stitch her up. Jim and Melinda worked together and realized the mom simply had a stroke from a brain tumor, that caused the car accident, not the email. Melinda, Ned and Eli tracked the email down to a little girl in the hospital. She had cancer and had lived there her whole life. She basically lived in a quarantined room as her immune system was so compromised. She had the doll with her from the email, and Melinda couldn’t understand how she could start something like this given she was only 7. At the end of the show we saw her talking to a ghost, a woman who really had been stitched up. The ghost was using the little girl to get revenge on someone it seemed . . .
My Thoughts
So my first thought in watching this show was I swore they had already done a chain letter story :-\
By the end of the show I was thinking they had possibly set up a Halloween episode for later down the road. I couldn’t think of anything creepier to do on Halloween, and that Scarlett girl was creepy (and oddly reminded me of Wynona Rider).
Based on this episode, the previews for next week, and the spoiler release for the week after . . . well it seems they are setting up the hospital as the major haunting ground this season. I guess it makes sense with Sam/Jim being a doctor now, and it is a way they can use the actor a lot more.
I do hope they somehow connect the hospital to the spirits under Grandview. I mean I don’t think that story ever even resolved as it was still going on last season when Sam remembered he was Jim.
Not sure why but the “Medium” releases aren’t coming at the same time as “Ghost Whisperer.”
What follows are the “Ghost Whisperer” spoilers for the 16th and “Medium” on the 9th. It is starting to look like “Ghost Whisperer” is setting up the hospital as the focal point for ghosts (given these spoilers, next week with Eli’s mom and dad, and this week’s episode with the little girl).
So last night was the “Ghost Whisperer” season premier. First a quick recap, then onto some thoughts.
The show started off with Melinda approaching her due date and worried about the book of changes and her baby. Jim/Sam had started medical school at this point. Melinda went into labor and something weird happened during her birth. There was a scare with her baby, meanwhile there was another woman giving birth who died. Melinda’s baby was okay and they named him Aiden Lucas, after Jim’s dad and also in honor of Sam.
Then we went to the fast forward. Aiden’s fifth birthday was coming up. Jim/Sam was now a resident at the hospital. Ned was in college and taking classes with Eli. Dehlia had become a big real estate salesperson.
Aiden was in a double quandary. First, his friends were all reaching the age where they would begin no longer seeing ghosts. The other problem was every year on his birthday, he would become strangely sick. He was no old enough to relay what was going on to Melinda. Every year a woman came around, and the woman confronted Melinda saying Aiden was her son. The woman is the one who died giving birth the night Melinda did, she was convinced her son’s spirit jumped into Aiden as Aiden stopped breathing shortly after he was born.
Well as it turned out, the woman’s son didn’t die, he was adopted by the baby’s father and his wife (the woman had a one night stand with him and they arranged for him and the wife to adopt), and the kid was fine and very much loved. Melinda learned from one of the watchers that Aiden is an empath, he feels and takes on emotions of those around him. That is why every year he got sick, it was the feeling of the ghost mom. Also he and Melinda share some psychic link which allows them to communicate with one another, though he doesn’t fully understand that yet.
It was a good premier. The fast forward was a little weird. I have so many questions as to what went on, hopefully they’ll try and fill them in some way like “Housewives” did. I felt like the storyline between Melinda and Aiden was pretty good, and clearly they can do a lot with that whereas they couldn’t if we watched her raising an infant for a few years. Then again, “Charmed” did a good job of it
I think I really had a lot of questions as to what happened with Sam’s family, Jim taking over Sam’s life. Did he tell any of his friends the truth? Is Sam’s family just out of the picture? They didn’t even do the usual “Oh look it’s Sam’s reflection!” bit. Aside from Melinda saying they should also name him Lucas, that was all that Sam was mentioned. Frankly if they are gunna now play the “we’re over that story, Sam’s not important anymore” then why the hell did they put us through that nonsense last season!
Below the jump are some spoilers for early October for “Medium” and “Ghost Whisperer.” Remember the season premiers are September 25th!
BTW, Connor Gibbs is playing Melinda and Jim’s son Aiden Lucas (not sure why they’re using Sam’s last name for him).
Read on for the premier night spoiler releases for both . . .
