UNDERSCORING THE STRENGTH OF ITS FALL SCHEDULE, ABC ENTERTAINMENT PICKS UP NINE SERIES FOR NEXT SEASON

Pickups Return Fall’s Most Successful Series: “Brothers & Sisters,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Dirty Sexy Money,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Lost,” “Private Practice,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Samantha Who?” and “Ugly Betty” Receive Pickups for ‘08-’09 Season

Today ABC Entertainment announced pickups for nine of its most popular shows, returning broadcast television’s most successful fall series. ABC Entertainment ordered episodes of “Brothers & Sisters,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Dirty Sexy Money,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Lost,” “Private Practice,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Samantha Who?” and “Ugly Betty.”

“The strength of our schedule this fall was unprecedented and speaks for itself,” said Stephen McPherson, president, ABC Entertainment. “We’re looking forward to building on that success.”

On average during Fall 2007 (10 complete weeks: 9/24-12/2/07), ABC was the No. 1 network among Adults 18-49 (3.9/10), delivering the top position in the key young adult sales demo on 7 of the first 10 weeks of the season and ranking No. 1 during the November Sweep for the third consecutive year. In addition, ABC claimed eight of the Top 20 highest-rated TV shows among young adults during the fall, including five of the Top 10 freshman series.

I have to hand it to “Private Practice,” they completely turned every love relationship on it’s head and went for the unpredictable. Instead of putting the love sick Cooper with Violet, which is where it was obviously heading, they paired him with the Chief of Staff from the hospital. Clearly Violet now wants him even more now that he has a “girlfriend.” Meanwhile instead of putting Addison with Pete they have hooked her up with the police officer she flirted with a few episodes back. Meanwhile Sam and Naomi seem to be back on, but now Dell has professed his love for Naomi. Wow! Things are getting very interesting with the show. I still want to see Cooper with Violet though

I’ve finally got caught up with “Private Practice.” I watched last week’s episode this past weekend and this week’s episode last night. I definitely feel the show has picked up a lot since the premier, which was lackluster in comparison to these later shows.

The past two episodes have mixed well the serious cases such as the gay tween, the pregnant woman with crones disease, the runner and the woman who was assaulted; with the lighter cases such as the old couple where the man kept fainting and Dell’s attempt to do his first pap smear. “You are not probing around in Lady Town!”

I also have been enjoying the relationships between the doctors. Addison and Pete are fighting their attraction to one another. We got a little more information on Pete’s past relationship, which was apparently not a healthy one as he hated his wife, yet blamed himself for not being able to save her.

Meanwhile Cooper and Violet. Oh lordy what to say about these two? Violet is one messed up therapist that is for sure! She’s so great at giving other’s advice on their relationships and marriages, yet when it comes to her own she’s terrible! I was glad Cooper this week decided he was just done being there for her when she once again ran back to her Ex. Violet finally realized what she was doing, walked away from the ex, but then went groveling to Coop asking why he wasn’t there for her today? Waa waa waa!

Sam and Naomi meanwhile have seemed to realize they can’t continue to act like they are the cool divorced parents and that the divorce doesn’t hurt and suck. I get the feeling they are going to try and hook Sam up with the Chief at the hospital.

So I finally caught up with “Private Practice” as well last night. I have to say this was probably my favorite episode so far!

First the run down as to what happened. Addison had to help a newly wed couple have a magical wedding night. The woman had an issue with her vajayjay that essentially made sex painful. Addison was forced to turn to Pete for help. Pete dealt with the anniversary of his wife’s death, we learned he basically hated his wife and her death had lead to issues for him, given he hated her. Violet helped a patient essentially get the courage to leave his wife, but in the end he stayed with her as it turned out she had a terminal illness (which she lied to him about having). Violet deleted her own ex’s last message from her answering machine. Cooper dealt with the mystery as to what was making a woman’s girls turn blue and become ill. Turns out their were playing in a neighbor’s shed near poisonous fertilizer. Finally Naomi dealt with her anger over Sam leaving her and the fact that she still wanted him.

So why did I like this episode so much? I have to say it was Violet and Cooper’s story lines that made it for me. I know this show was devised as a spin-off for Addison, but I have to say I am not liking Addison! It just seems since moving to LA and joining this show she’s developed this “Poor me, my life sucks, this situation sucks” attitude. I just want to say shut up and stop whining! Cooper and Violet made the episode for me, as well as Naomi and her cake fetish. I don’t know how all you felt about it or the show in general, you can chime in with comments. I’m just wondering though, are they wanting us to be annoyed with Addison or are we supposed to feel sorry for her? It seems to me to make the “star” of the spinoff annoying isn’t exactly a great gameplan!
