Swingtown: Party Down

Swingtown: Party Down

Posted by Dustin on 08.03.2008 at 3:23 pm

This past week’s episode was probably the best episode yet. The episode started off with Tom and Trina having a dinner party for Brad and Sylvia. Brad had just written an article on how more couples were experimenting with open marriages. The article has been commissioned to be turned into a book. Brad was planning to go to the Palomino Club, a big sex club in town, to do research. He invited them all and also said he would like to interview them. Susan seemed game, but Bruce didn’t want to go or be interviewed.

Before bed that night, Bruce finally admitted to Susan that the night of the blackout he was with Melinda, and they kissed then and also later at the Puzzlerama party. Susan seemed miffed, but not overly angry. The next morning she told Bruce she wanted to go to that club with Sylvia and Brad, she felt they needed to go. She wanted to control the sex, not let the sex control their marriage.

Trina meanwhile tried to smooth things over with Janet, attempting to bake her some muffins. Cooking isn’t her thing, apparently Tom does most of it, as she burned the muffins and they were stuck to the pan. She and Janet had a laugh over it.

Later Janet went to return Trina’s pan, only to find her and Susan talking. It seems Susan and Bruce were going to the club and she wanted Trina and Tom to go. Janet learned about the trip and announced she wanted to go too! She felt it was something Roger was getting into, because he came to the party here the day of the blackout. She borrowed a sexy red dress from Trina, and Trina and Susan dolled her up. Susan called Bruce, who was meeting Roger to talk about possibly getting him a job at his company. She asked him to bring Roger to the club tonight.

The women all arrived at the club, where the boys already were. Janet saw this one woman coming onto Roger. The woman told Janet she was a lucky woman to be with Roger. Later Roger and Janet got a tour of the backroom at the party! They disappeared into it while Susan told Bruce she really wanted to take Brad and Sylvia home. He agreed, so Tom and Trina said they would make sure Roger and Janet got home.

Meanwhile, Laurie and her teacher Doug were now doing it like rabbits. The presidential political conventions were coming up, and Laure got the idea to watch the republican convention at her parent’s house. She said everyone would be out for the night and what better place to watch it than an actual republican home. Unfortunately what they didn’t count on was her parents coming home early and with guests! Laure and Doug hid behind a bar while they had to listen to her parents getting high on pot and then begin to . . . well . . . you know.

Trying to sneak out, Laurie and Doug got caught. Bruce was furious that Laurie was with an obviously older man, and even more upset when he found out this was her summer school teacher. Brad, Sylvia and Doug basically all ran out of the house as the fight began. Laurie called her parents out, not wanting a lecture when they were getting high and about to do who knows what with those two freaks. Bruce announced that ever since moving here this family had spiraled out of control. He was going to take back control, he didn’t know how, but he had to think on it. He then stormed off.

At Roger and Janet’s, their son Rick was having a pong party with his friends. BJ showed up with Samantha, who then whooped everyone’s butt at pong. Rick got the idea to play spin the bottle. He ended up having to spend two minutes in the closet with Sam. He asked why she came, she said BJ brought her. Rick claimed he had been friends with BJ his whole life and she was just a project for him, a hurt bird to take care of. She then called Rick out, saying it was obvious how he felt about BJ and she was not trying to take him away. Rick planted a kiss on her, and she planted her fist on his face! Samantha stormed out and BJ followed. Samantha told him that she doesn’t like going to parties, she does drink and she doesn’t play games. He said neither does he, and they kissed. Later as they headed home they caught the drama going on inside BJ’s home through the open back door the others fled out of earlier.

Over at Tom and Trina’s, the party from the club was still going on. Roger kept getting hit on by this one girl, and Janet had a talk with Tom. She thought Roger wanted this, but it was something she couldn’t do. She didn’t think any of Tom’s friends would ever want her. Tom gave her a kiss and told her she was a very beautiful woman, and “this” would only serve to bring Roger back home to her in the end. Janet went to see Roger, saying she’d be leaving and if he wanted to stay . . . As it turned out, he didn’t, he was doing this as he thought it’s what she wanted. The whole night was her idea he reminded her. They then left together.

My Thoughts
I really loved this episode. I felt for once I was engaged in every story, even the kids who I normally find boring and filler. I think it was bringing everything to a head, even with the kids, that made this episode so good. All the stories finally started intertwining.

I was actually shocked that Susan was not more angry at Bruce for the kisses, but then I started thinking . . . I think it’s clear it’s been Susan all along who has had a thing for Roger these many years. Does Roger like her? That part I’m still fuzzy on. But it’s starting to make sense, especially why she’s so gung-ho to go party with Brad and Sylvia. I think Bruce isn’t giving her what she needs. What she needs (or wants) is Roger, so maybe she’s looking for substitutes?

I love the whole thing with Tom and Trina closing their marriage because of the turn-about going on. Tom and Trina weren’t able to play, and Susan and Bruce seem to almost be taking up the reigns. Meanwhile you had the hilarity that was Roger and Janet misunderstanding what the other wanted and ending up in that backroom. Oh I really wanted to know what happened back there, if anything!

Tom planting a kiss on Janet was ironically the hottest part of the whole episode, if not the whole season. The look on her face was priceless and I think Tom actually would go there if given the chance!

I also loved Janet and Trina basically becoming closer friends. At the end when Janet saw Trina’s photographs it’s like she was really seeing Trina, commenting that she’s actually an observer of the world and people around her and that she has misjudged her. Trina said she had misjudged Janet as well. Aww, BFFs!

Laurie and her teacher were hilarious in this episode when they were stuck behind the bar listening to her parents. I don’t know how she could have held out as long as she did. I was squirming along with her thinking “Oh this is so gross she’s going to listen to her parents having an orgy! Permanent lifelong scars!”

Even BJ, Rick and Samantha entertained me in this episode, which was the most shocking part. I think it was the fact they went where I initially thought they were going at the beginning of the season . . . making Janet and Roger’s son gay and in love with his best friend. Samantha called him out on it, ironically while they were in the closet. His reaction was to just kiss her, which pretty much sealed the deal. Oh what Janet will think of this when she finds out.

Swingtown: Puzzlerama!

Swingtown: Puzzlerama!

Posted by Dustin on 07.27.2008 at 12:10 pm

This episode opened with Susan in the Decker’s pool with Roger, so obviously having a dream that they were about to get it on. They were however caught by Bruce and Janet, who suddenly materialized in the pool. Susan woke up . . . and I guess we have an answer to that question . . . Susan does have a little something for Roger! Now we just have to find out if Roger has something for her.

The bulk of this episode was about Trina’s annual Puzzlerama party. She had hidden various colorful chips around town in all sorts of places and then at the party offered cryptic clues where to find the chips. People were paired in teams of men and women and sent to find them.

Bruce’s co-worker Melinda showed up, though she wasn’t invited. She scored a date with someone else. She also made sure she was paired with Bruce as his partner. She wanted to talk to him about her proposition, which Bruce apparently turned down. She let him know it was okay and he was a perfect gentlemen, no hard feelings.

Janet was paired with Tom, while Roger was put with Susan. This was another not-supposed to happen pairing, all screwed up by Melinda’s arrival. Susan later in the episode asked Trina if she did this on purpose, she told her no and Roger was supposed to be with Gail.

During the search for the pieces, Bruce and Melinda kept talking and finally it happened, Bruce kissed her and kissed her hard! Of course this happens as Janet and Tom were approaching. Tom saw and quickly kept Janet from seeing. I have a hunch that Melinda isn’t after Bruce but instead his job. She’s going to file a complaint I bet, get him fired and take his job! There is something about this girl I just don’t trust.

The game ended up in a tie, so Janet demanded a tie breaker question. The answer was hidden up in Trina’s room, and there she found the photos from the pool party . . . including one of Roger! She was furious and he confessed the day of the heatwave when he wasn’t at work he was here with Susan, as her air conditioner was broke. Janet was furious with just about everyone.

Later Bruce seemed miffed with Susan, but she said this was Roger’s secret to keep and he didn’t want anyone knowing he’d been fired. She never meant or would keep secrets from him. Of course Bruce is keeping a big one from her!

Elsewhere in this episode, Laurie was in some silly contest with her ex-teacher/boyfriend to see who could get the most voters to register. They were campaigning for Carter. Meanwhile BJ returned from camp and hung out with Samantha. I still say the kids storylines are snoozers!

Swingtown: We’re Having A Heatwave!

Swingtown: We’re Having A Heatwave!

Posted by Dustin on 07.19.2008 at 2:12 am

In the latest episode of “Swingtown” the town was hit with a heatwave! Trina responded by, of course, throwing a pool party for the neighborhood.

Trina decided to take up photography, a hobby she once loved in her younger years, but apparently gave up. It seems seeing the old boy-toy brought back some nostalgia, as well as a bit of the Trina she had lost over the years. She is woman hear her roar! I think Trina is tired of taking crap honestly.

Trina also found out Tom slept with a flight attendant, while she was not present. She confronted him, and he claimed he was upset and jealous over her and the boyfriend. She point blank gave him an option for them not to do “it” with him, but he went along with it. She said what he did was cheating and against the rules, as they weren’t together. Trina told Tom that it was time for them to re-visit the rules and remain exclusive for awhile. I knew it! I so knew these two would end up getting out of swinging. It’s temporary now, but who knows. I think Trina is moving away from Tom honestly.

Meanwhile, Janet bounced a check, which made her call the bank to find out why, which caused her to learn Roger hadn’t deposited a paycheck, which made her go to his work and find out he was laid off. Ohhh no, she was not happy!

Roger, not being able to go to work and not able to hang out at home, ended up over at Janet’s trying to fix her broken air conditioner. When the power went out, the job pretty much became pointless. They ended up heading to the Decker’s for the pool party.

Susan and Roger talked at the party. He even admitted to her that he can see why she and Bruce did what they did with the Deckers. It appeared as if Roger was hitting on her and going to make a move, but he didn’t. Seriously, I thought he was going to grab her and slip her some major tongue. I’m still convinced he’s in love with Susan though. Of course the biggest twist would be that he’s not and we’ve all been faked out! He told her that he wasn’t sorry he was fired, that job was killing him. He said he wanted more out of life. They talked about love, real love, and Roger thought it was being with someone who sees you as you see yourself. Susan described how she saw him . . . then quickly said she’s sure Janet sees him that way too. She then encouraged him to tell Janet the truth. What if all this time Susan’s been the one secretly in love with Roger? Wow, major turnabout!

Roger went home where Janet told him she knew he was let go before he could say it. He then let it all out, saying he hated that job, he’s not sorry, and he wants more out of his life. Shockingly Janet said . . . “okay!” She said she was his wife, and whatever he wanted she would support. They then had a romantic dinner by candlelight. Go Janet! She’s opening up and not being such a tight wad. I am thinking Janet might go out and . . . . get a job! Shocking I know, but the women’s lib movement was several years go (in their time).

Bruce meanwhile got stuck at work with the new girl, who of course propositioned him. He said he had a wife, and she said she had a hotel room. Gee, didn’t see that one coming! Meanwhile Laurie and her teacher got closer and went to some softball game which he was playing in. Zzzzzzz! Laurie did however pass her class with an A, and hinted to her mom she had a new guy.

Fun bonus material! Everyone who watches this show seems to love Janet. I don’t know if the show will survive the “summer series curse,” but I hope it does, and I hope Miriam Shor (who plays Janet) gets an Emmy nom next year! Anyway, I first got exposed to this wonderful actress from the movie “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” in which she played Yitzak, a role she originated in the off-Broadway show. Hmmm, how to describe him? Yes I said him. Yitzak is an eastern European man who, well who dreams of being a woman. He’s part of a rock band, whose lead singer Hedwig is, well was once a man? It’s too confusing and messy to go into, but one of the best rock operas to come along in a long time. It’s complete comedy and camp. The clip I wanted to show that really showcased her of course has too many F-bombs to be played at anyone’s work safely. So I’m settling for this clip. Enjoy the brilliance that is Miriam!

Post Note: I replaced the original clip I had selected with the movie opener. It features more of Miriam and well, is less spoilerish.

Swingtown: The Ladies Who Lunch

Swingtown: The Ladies Who Lunch

Posted by Dustin on 07.13.2008 at 7:25 pm

In this episode, Trina saw Tom off at the airport, and at the same time ran into her old high school boyfriend (played by Ryan McPartlin, Hank on “Passions”). Tom saw the connection between the two and was jealous! Trina and her old boyfriend made a “date” to get together while he was in town. He came over and they reminisced over old slides of them back in high school. Tom called to check on her, only to find out she was hanging out with her old boy-toy at home. He was really jealous, and ended up having some drinks with a stewardess. Oh we can see where that was going! Tom was going to have his own fling, thinking Trina was having one of her own.

Tom came home and he, Trina and the ex-boyfriend ended up having a threesome! Tom admitted to Trina how he was afraid of losing her, that maybe she had regrets about marrying him. It was the first time we really saw Tom as insecure. I’m also thinking that there is an age difference between these two. They never said there was, but I’m guessing we are just supposed to have figured out it existed.

Susan had a lunch date with the Lady’s Auxiliary Club. Bruce’s boss’ wife was the head honcho and he was hoping she’d basically be a way for him to make his way higher up the corporate ladder. Susan, not wanting to go alone, invited a thrilled Janet. Janet saw this for a way and her and Roger to also make their way up the rungs of society.

At the lunch, the ladies discussed a charity auction they were having for the hospital. Susan was a bit upset to learn that the ladies actually didn’t visit the hospital to do charity work. As the head honcho stated to her “Dear, we’re not doctors!” Meanwhile, Janet made an impression on the boss lady, who spilled red wine on her brand new white Armani jacket. She came to the rescue and saved her jacket, which got her an invite to the charity dinner as the boss’ lady’s personal guest.

Janet told Roger her news, and how she saw them going places. Perhaps they could even join the country club. Roger said they didn’t have the money for that. Janet suggested to Roger that it was time he asked for a raise, and he’s his companies best salesman of insurance. Roger went to see his boss, making the case for a promotion to a management position. His boss agreed, he was too qualified for what he was doing. His boss said he had kept him around as long as he could in this economy, and wished him luck wherever he ends up! Oopsie! I thought that was harsh. I mean he is the best salesman they had, and they fired him? Roger decided not to tell Janet, as she was so excited about the charity auction at the country club that night. She even got a new dress and her hair done. Might I say Miss Janet was looking pretty sexy too! Too bad she didn’t look like that all the time.

Over at Bruce’s work, a new girl started and she was the only female buyer on the stock exchange floor. All the men in Bruce’s firm were making bets on who’d be the first to sleep with her, and Bruce was the favored. They asked Bruce if he wanted to place a bet? I have a really bad feeling about where this one is going! Oh if Bruce cheats on Susan there will be hell to pay.

At the charity auction, the head honcho boss lady was impressed with the work Janet and Susan had done to help out and invited them both to join the Lady’s Auxiliary Club. Janet of course jumped, but Susan wasn’t so sure. Susan didn’t think it was right for her, she hoped Janet didn’t mind. Janet was somewhat thrilled that they still wanted her even without Susan, as so many times it had been a package deal. Meanwhile Bruce wasn’t too happy with his wife, as he thought this was a way for her to get in with his boss’ wife, which could mean good things for him. Susan seemed miffed that Bruce wanted to pimp her out basically.

Janet bid on a free dinner for two at the country club, won and paid 100 dollars for it. Roger went to Susan and asked her to get Janet’s big check back, as he had lost his job. He said he didn’t tell Janet because he knew how much this night meant to her, and he could pretend things were fine for one night. Touched, Susan got the check back but then bought the item Janet bid on for them, telling Roger that she owed Janet dinner and she didn’t need to know. Susan, inspired by Roger, accepted the invitation to the Lady’s Auxiliary Club in order to help out Bruce. Bruce thought she didn’t want to join. Susan said she could pretend it was right for her, even maybe making it work.

Meanwhile, Bruce’s conscience got the best of him. He told his female co-worker about the bet going around. As it turned out, she knew and slept with one of the guys to split the money with him! She asked Bruce how much he lost, but he said he didn’t bet. She admired him and said he was one of the good ones. I don’t trust this girl one bit. I can see her using and spitting Bruce out to further her own career.

Susan and Bruce’s son BJ was sent off to camp in this episode. Thank the heavens as his storyline was boring as sin. It looks like the writers even got bored writing for him. Laurie meanwhile faced her final exam, which was oral. Their assignment was to speak about the philosopher’s they had studied and draw from examples from their own life about being authentic to one’s self. Laurie basically screwed the assignment up, not wanting to say anything personal. Later she confronted her teacher saying she couldn’t say what she felt as it would have gotten him fired. She wanted to say she couldn’t stop thinking about him and wanted to be with him. He pointed out that he wasn’t her teacher anymore, and they shared a big fat smooch. I had to say I thought the teacher, pushing Laurie in front of the class to do the assignment as assigned, was asking for it. It was like he was challenging her to say it to the whole class, and I thought that was really crummy!

On the Next Swingtown . . .

  • Trina learns Tom cheated with his stewardess.
  • Bruce’s co-worker hits on him and suggests they sleep together.
  • Roger makes a play for Susan at the Decker’s pool!
  • Roger tells Janet “he needs more.” She reminds him they took vows!

    Swingtown: Deep Throat

    Swingtown: Deep Throat

Posted by Dustin on 07.08.2008 at 12:15 am

Tom began his flights to Japan in this episode, and Trina didn’t like him being so far away and for so long. She should be worried, and Tom was bad and went out and partied with a friend. Oh dear! When Trina learns Tom has been a very bad boy, she won’t be happy at all.

Back at home, Trina threw a party to support none other than porn star Harry Reems, who was being targeted by the US government for his films, which was simply a distraction tactic according to Trina and friends. Bruce wouldn’t go to the party and didn’t want Susan to go, but after looking into the cause, Susan thought it was something they should support. She insisted she was going, which he did not like one bit.

Susan did indeed go to the party, while Bruce went bowling with Roger. Bruce talked to Roger about how he felt ever since they hooked up with Trina and Tom that Susan had been changing. Meanwhile Susan talked to Trina as well, worried she was changing and it was Bruce who was lagging behind her.

Janet went to Trina’s party, mainly as a way to try and win Susan’s approval. Roger and Bruce stormed it and tried to get their wives to leave, but they refused. They then had a private screening of “Deep Throat” and Janet watched it! The most hilarious moment of the episode was when Harry Reems hit on Janet and invited her to the “party” he was starting up in Trina’s basement.

The kids, as usual, had some stories going on. BJ got closer to his neighbor Samantha. Meanwhile Laurie’s ex-boyfriend confronted her, knowing what was going on with her and her teacher, and he made veiled threats about getting him fired. She wanted to know what he wanted and of course he wanted her back. Laurie let him know she didn’t like who he’d become and seemingly got him to back down from his threats. Laurie and her teacher agreed to cool things until she was no longer his student, which was in two weeks.

    My Thoughts
I have to say this was probably one of the most hilarious episodes to date, simply because of the fact it was about “Deep Throat” and Janet attending the party AND the viewing of the movie! Janet is my favorite character on this show.

I will admit, I have seen “Deep Throat.” I was curious as to what the hoopla was about over this movie so I got my hands on a copy and watched it. Let me restate that, I started to watch it and quickly got bored and fast-forwarded through the movie. Yes it’s porn, no doubt about it. It’s also just an incredibly stupid and awful movie. I don’t know if porn has a “camp” genre, but if it does, this is no doubt the king of camp-porn!

The idea of Susan being the more “open” one and Bruce suddenly pulling back and having issues is a total turn-about on what you’d expect, and I have to admit I’m loving it. Normally you’d think it would be the guy all into the whole sexual rebellion aspect and the wife going along, perhaps out of fear of losing her man. Seeing the man having those issues is very different!

Roger . . . poor Roger . . . . every other Friday! Leave it to Janet to schedule in sex. I’m still waiting for her to just go nuts and lose it . . . sexually speaking I mean. I think when she finds out her hubby has a thing for Susan then she’s gunna jump on the nearest person. One would think that would end up being Bruce, but I think they will go for the shock value and make it Trina.

BJ and Samantha, I wish they’d just end this story honestly. It has bored me since day one and I just don’t get it. Either introduce something shocking to shake it up or let it die.

Finally Laurie’s ex did try and have the teach fired, which I thought might happen. She seems to have gotten him to back off, but I’m not so sure he will. I have yet to figure out what grade Laurie is in. She’ obviously in summer school, and the class is obviously an AP class for college credit. My guess is she’s out of high school then, which would at least make any relationship with her teacher not against the law at this point. I loved Laurie in this episode because of the way she’s opening up with her mom and essentially “rebelling” against her dad with her political views, swaying her mom in the process.

    Swingtown: Let’s Play Twister!

    Swingtown: Let’s Play Twister!

Posted by Dustin on 06.29.2008 at 4:55 pm

In this episode of “Swingtown,” Susan and Bruce were preparing for their annual weekend trip to a family cabin with Roger and Janet. However Roger, knowing what Susan and Bruce had done with the Deckers, didn’t want to go and made Janet cancel. He claimed he wasn’t feeling well.

Susan and Bruce ended up inviting Trina and Tom at the last minute, and they accepted. Of course Janet soon saw Roger wasn’t feeling as bad as he had claimed, and she decided they should go to the cabin after all. They arrived just as the other four were about to take a group shower after swimming in the lake!

Janet and Roger decided to leave, but Susan insisted everyone stay, they’d make it work. Trina and Janet continued firing shots at each other as the night went on, and Susan noticed Roger was distant. Bruce finally told her that he had told Roger what they had done. She realized she had to talk to him. Susan served the brownies, which Trina laced with pot. Determined to show the Decker’s up, Janet had a pot brownie!

Roger and Susan had a talk and Susan tried to assure him they hadn’t changed. Susan says she was just trying to find what made her happy. When she asked if he was happy, he said “mostly.” Meanwhile Bruce, Trina, Tom and Janet ended up playing “Twister” and Janet was queen of the game. She then decided everyone should go skinny dipping, which they did.

The next morning Janet didn’t seem to remember much of what happened the night before. Per Susan’s suggestion, the guys slept in one room while the girls slept in the other. Both Janet and Roger as well as Tom and Trina decided to hit the road. However Roger and Janet stayed an extra day when Tom and Trina really had to go, because of Tom’s new job.

Back at home, BJ hung out with Ricky and Samantha. They broke into the Decker’s place to play in the pool, and Ricky got drunk on gin. Samantha began to tell BJ about the Deckers and what they do, but stopped.

Meanwhile Laurie made dinner for her teacher, who came over to talk to her about how they couldn’t be doing this. She felt he would only be her teacher for one more week. She told him the two of them worked together, and he knew that, which is why he had to go. After he left we saw Laurie’s old boyfriend watching from his car . . . realizing something is up.

I loved Janet in this episode, how she finally let loose and started having some fun. Unfortunately it was thanks to a pot brownie, and she doesn’t seem to remember anything she did the night before. I also can’t believe Janet hasn’t figured out what is going on between the Deckers and the Millers. She must know, she is just in denial and if she doesn’t say it then it’s not true. Meanwhile Roger I thought was about to burst and tell Susan he’s in love with her and been in love with her for years, but he didn’t. I think when Roger finally admits he loves Susan that Janet is going to go insane and have some crazy affair!

Over to the kids, the son and his two friends are still boring me to tears. The daughter’s story has gotten a bit interesting now that her old boyfriend has found out about her and the teach. I think he’ll either turn the teacher in to get him fired or attack him. Something about that ex irks me, he doesn’t seem very sane.
