Private Practice Thoughts?

Private Practice Thoughts?

So tonight was the big premier of “Private Practice,” the Grey’s spin-off (which airs at the same time as “Bionic Woman,” my Tivos will be going haywire this season!) So anyways what are your thoughts? I’m still trying to remember all the names really, aside from Addison. The new Naomi (Audra McDonald) seemed to come off much harsher and more bitchy than the one from the pilot last season. I’m not sure if that was their point in switching the actors? Basically the stories tonight centered around Addison and Pete trying to save a girl who was having a problematic birth in the office, Pete and Viola trying to figure out why a woman basically lost it in a department store and started counting floor tiles, and Naomi and her ex (Taye Diggs’ character) fighting with a hospital because a woman wanted her dead boyfriend’s sperm to get pregnant. The crazy wacky Grey’s like medical stories were all there, but the players were just different. I liked it, but I’m not sure if I loved it. If it weren’t for Amy Brenneman (Viola) I don’t know if I would keep tuning in or not.

  1. Both me and my sister (who is the megafan that turned me onto Grey’s Anatomy) hated it. Well, maybe hate is a strong word. We definitely didn’t enjoy it though. We both agreed to keep watching to see if it finds it’s footing, but as it stands right now it just doesn’t have the same feel as Grey’s. (Which makes me question all of the reviews of late saying if you love Grey’s then you’ll love Private Practice!)

Also major thumbs down to the recasts. We both loved the original Naomi a lot more, and we’re not sure if Dell is the same or not – he didn’t look the same, but it’s been awhile so our collective memory is a little foggy.

Definitely more excited about tomorrow night: Ugly Betty and Grey’s Anatomy baby! *dances happy dance*

  2. I liked it. I’m a huge fan of Grey’s myself. My favorite part is the last spoken line of the show. Addison had just did the big rant and left, when Naomi said, “That’s why I didn’t tell you she was coming.” Best line of the show.

  3. I think the jury is still out on this. I like Grey’s but I wasn’t wowed by the spin-off episode for this show. I had no intention of watching Private Practice — I turned it on since there wasn’t really anything else that grabbed my interest.

This episode was OK but I was jarred by the beginning. I never pictured Addison as the dancing around nekkid type. And she didn’t look that comfortable doing it. (Izzie I could totally see doing that. Maybe even Meredith. But not Addison.)’

I’m not sure I’m going to stick with this one. We’ll have to see if Wed. night comes up with any more intriguing offerings…

  4. I think you hit the nail on the head, k8. What I think I felt throughout the premiere was that Addison felt very out of character. It was like she was just assuming whatever role was appropriate for each scene.

Like I said though, I’ll continue to watch at least for a few weeks. I never decide on a show just based on one episode. Though is technically two I guess. SPEAKING OF WHICH: I have to say I enjoyed the “pilot”-within-a-show more than the actual show. Whether the casting had anything to do with it or not I can’t say.

Here’s hoping Shonda hasn’t lost her touch during the break and Grey’s is still as good as ever. (Or better, please – Season 3 was definitely me least favorite season, even though I did love it)

  5. I liked the first show of private practice. I loved the change of Naomi, the new actress was much better in the part. Addison was the best at the end where she sums up her day and informs everyone that a vote is not needed because she is staying. The best line was Naomi’s That is why I didn’t tell you she was coming.

  6. I’ve gotta say that I really enjoyed Private Practice last night. I thought the stories were great and I even teared up a little at the end with the baby being born and the woman that lost her son. Who knows how I’ll feel about it in a couple of weeks but I definately enjoyed the first episode.

  7. I thought it was OK. I don’t know, it just didn’t have that umpf….I think when Addison was having issue with only ONE patient a day, that also made me think….boring.

It wasn’t horrible or anything, I like all the actors, but when the TiVo starts getting full and I am behind in my TV watching, I am afraid it may end up getting deleted. But, I am game for a few more episodes.

  8. Well I didn’t expect to like the new actress but I found myself feeling that the Naomi character and Addison worked better together now. I’m definatly looking forward to the upcomming weeks and cant wait to get to see more other the other docs at the practice.

  10. I liked it and will watch for now, but it felt like the characters were trying too hard. I agree that I didnt see Addison as the dance naked kind of person and she looked very uncomfortable and forced but I think that is one of the changes she was looking for, with up and moving and doind things differently. I have not totally bought in to this yet, but a strong maybe and I will watch again for right now.

  12. I have to say that I have only seen the first season of Grey’s so wasn’t familiar with Addison’s character at all but this first episode totally pulled me in and I can’t understand why all the negativity and bad reviews toward it. It is not supposed to be Grey’s Anatomy so of course it is going to feel different. The tone feels much more whimsical and fun and I laughed throughout the entire episode. Plus, it’s got the best cast of any show this season!! This is definitely one that I’m gonna have to season pass on my Tivo. My poor Tivo is gonna get a workout this season!! Here’s hoping Private Practice sticks around for a long time and only continues to get better and better!!

  13. I started to watch Private Practice, felt it was cute in the beginning with Addison in the nude. The thing is I started to get bored in the middle of it. I decided not to tune in. It’s one night I can live without watching TV.

  14. I have never seen Grey’s Anatomy. I caught PP by accident, not knowing it was a spin-off, and I loved it. I thought the storylines were interesting, and I like the quirky characters. Hopefully it will keep getting better!

  15. I was really looking forward to PP. I liked Addison on Grey’s but I have to admit I thought the premeire was completely lack luster and did not draw me in at all. I’ll probably give it another chance, but I don’t forsee this being a can’t miss show. Maybe a DVR show to watch when nothing else is on.
