Parenthood Gets A Bit Dark
So last night was the second episode of “Parenthood” on NBC. I felt in comparison to the first episode, this was a bit darker and more serious. The eldest son Adam had to come face to face with his son’s asperger’s syndrome, while Sarah got shot down for a great job because she didn’t have a college degree (but she did have the talent). Meanwhile Sarah’s daughter was informed she had to repeat 10th grade again because her grades and credits from her last school weren’t good enough for the new one.
I don’t know, it definitely wasn’t the funny episode the first one was. It did have it’s moments, but I feel like they made this much more a family drama as opposed to a comedy or dramedy. I have yet to read about the ratings and how it’s fairing. My guess is NBC has nothing to show from the Jay Leno disaster, so it’s not like they are going to pull this off air anytime soon. They’ll probably run out all taped episodes and then make a decision whether or not to keep it for next year.
I like it, and it’s largely gotten good reviews. I don’t think it’s meant to be a comedy. It’s a family-centric drama which is lightened with comedic moments, and is very authentic. Parents of children with Asperger’s especially like the show for this reason.
It’s not for everyone, but it has a lot of promise and I’m going to keep watching.
